Golf in Punta Mita: A Guide to the Bahía and Pacífico Courses

Punta Mita is known for its beaches, oceanfront villas and laid-back lifestyle, but it is also one of Mexico’s most memorable golf destinations. Inside the private community are two Jack Nicklaus Signature courses—Pacífico and Bahía—each offering a distinctly different way to play along the coast.

Both are 18-hole, par-72 championship courses, and both combine immaculate conditions with views that remind you exactly where you are: on a tropical peninsula bordered by the Pacific Ocean and Bahía de Banderas. Yet they do not feel like variations of the same course. Pacífico is open, scenic and welcoming to a wide range of players, while Bahía is more contoured, strategic and demanding around the greens.

For golfers staying in Punta Mita, the best answer is simple: play both.

Pacífico: Punta Mita’s Iconic Ocean Course

Opened in 1999, Pacífico was the first of Punta Mita’s two Jack Nicklaus Signature designs. It is the course most first-time visitors recognize, largely because of its famous optional island hole, the “Tail of the Whale.”

Pacífico features seven holes that face or run alongside the ocean. The course also looks inland toward the Sierra Madre mountains, creating a changing backdrop throughout the round. Its broad fairways and generous landing areas make it approachable for recreational golfers, but coastal winds, large greens and carefully positioned bunkers give stronger players plenty to consider.

The defining experience arrives at the par-three 3B, the Tail of the Whale—the world’s only natural ocean-island green. Reaching it requires a carry over the Pacific, and because the green is accessible only at low tide, it is played as an optional extra hole rather than as part of the standard 18. Even golfers who do not find the putting surface tend to remember the shot. A local secret - we actually skip playing the hole because of how hard it is to hit the green. Pacífico can stretch beyond 7,000 yards from the back tees, although several tee options allow players to choose a comfortable distance. The course has a resort-friendly character: visually dramatic and enjoyable without requiring a low handicap. It is an excellent choice for mixed-ability groups, first-time Punta Mita golfers and anyone who values scenery as much as the scorecard.

Bahía: The More Strategic Challenge

Bahía opened in 2009 as Nicklaus’ second Punta Mita course. Rather than duplicate Pacífico, it was designed as its more demanding counterpart. The course runs through rolling terrain with undulating fairways, contoured greens and deep greenside bunkers that place a premium on accuracy and thoughtful approach play.

Five holes offer views of Bahía de Banderas, and one of the course’s most striking stretches reaches the beach near "Bahia", Punta Mita’s celebrated surf break. Lakes and other water features add variety as the routing moves between tropical vegetation, residential areas and the coastline.

Bahía measures >7,000 from the tips as well. Distance alone, however, does not define its difficulty. Uneven lies and movement in the greens mean that positioning matters. A drive in the fairway can still leave a complicated approach, and missing on the wrong side of a green may bring one of the deep bunkers or a difficult recovery into play.

Better golfers often appreciate Bahía for the decisions it demands, but higher-handicap players can enjoy it by selecting the right tees and resisting the temptation to attack every flag. It is a course that rewards patience and tends to reveal more of its character each time it is played.

Pacífico vs. Bahía: Which Course Should You Play?

If you have time for two rounds, playing both provides the complete Punta Mita golf experience. The courses complement one another remarkably well.

Choose Pacífico if you are visiting for the first time, playing with golfers of different abilities or want the course with Punta Mita’s most famous ocean hole. Its wider playing corridors make it the more comfortable introduction, while its coastal setting keeps the round visually spectacular.

Choose Bahía if you prefer a sterner test, enjoy strategic course management or want greens and approaches that demand more precision. Its movement, bunkering and uneven lies make it the more technical of the two.

For many groups, the ideal sequence is Pacífico first and Bahía second. Pacífico introduces the landscape and provides the bucket-list moment; Bahía then offers the deeper competitive challenge.

Planning Your Round

Access to the Punta Mita Golf Club is reserved for members, Punta Mita residents and eligible guests staying at Punta Mita resorts or participating residences. Villa access can vary, so it is important to confirm golf privileges when reserving your accommodations.

The first tee time is generally around 7:30 a.m., subject to sunrise and seasonal operations. Early rounds usually offer cooler temperatures and calmer conditions, while afternoon and twilight golf can bring dramatic light across the ocean and better rates. If playing Pacífico, ask whether the tide is expected to allow play on the Tail of the Whale during your round.

Traditional golf attire is required. Men should wear a collared shirt or sleeved mock-neck shirt, while denim, swimwear, gym shorts and cut-offs are not permitted. Rental clubs and shoes are available, and the club also offers private instruction, group lessons and playing lessons.
